The Best American Muscle Cars of the 1970s

The 1970s brought the muscle car and nobody managed to really capture the imaginations of the market like America. American muscle cars of the time really put the modern manufacturer’s definition of the ‘muscle car’ in its place.

The cars of the past cost little and gave the average man the chance to own something special, something with more power, something badder than anything else on the road – aside from the next muscle car perhaps! Here are some of our favourites they won’t trust you with on contract hire.

Buick GSX Stage 1

This is the epitome of the 1970s muscle car and is said to have developed upwards of 360 horse power and up to 400 in some cases. The GSX looks every inch the 1970s monster and even the colours Apollo White or Saturn Yellow are of the ear. Of course, the true test of it as a muscle car was its ability to do quarter of a mile in just over 13 seconds.

Ford Mustang Boss 429

Though a few months shy of the 1970s, we had to include this awesome and also quite expensive Ford. This beautiful and beefy looking Mustang was renowned for its smooth handling and the fact it had a semi-hemi 429 engine. Aside from the Shelby based Mustangs it was the most expensive Mustang of the period.

Plymouth Hemi Cuda

This rubber burning brute could do 0-60 in 5.6 seconds and was a true muscle car. It also looked like the meanest, most intimidating of all the 1970s muscle cars. It manufactured 425 from its Hemi 426 engine and only had one engine size. It’s the sort of car you don’t want following you with full beams down a dark street.

454 Chevelle SS

Any car that comes with over 450 horse power is good enough to be a muscle car in out boos and this low cost auto was available to the average man on the street. It really was a wonderful muscle car and even came with the dual stripes up the centre of the car.

ZL1 Camaro

This is one of the rarest but one of the most astounding cars of the day. This machine Camaro comes with aluminium V8 and could do 0-60 in just over 5 seconds – amazing for the day. It was quite common to see one of these ZL1s on a drag strip thanks to their speed produced by the 500 horse power engine.
